Please join us for an exhibit opening in the Chapin Gallery, Friday February 14, 2pm. Featuring the Williams Gospel Choir, the opening of a new exhibition highlighting materials relating to Douglass. Refreshments will be served, including tea and birthday cake.
On the occasion of the 207th anniversary of Frederick Douglass’s birth, we invite you to “Open Thy Mouth” and “Keep Your Hand on the Plow” as we celebrate Douglass’s life and legacy with a display drawn from the holdings of Williams Special Collections.
Douglass celebrated February 14 as his birthday during his lifetime. Soon after his death in 1895, this day came to be widely recognized through the efforts of Mary Church Terrell and other advocates. African American educators eventually succeeded in establishing February as Black History Month in 1976. The current exhibit will be on view through May 6, 2025.
