Pseudonyms, or fictitious names, have been long used by women as tools to overcome adversity. Whether it be to distance themselves from femininity in order to escape sexist practices in publishing or other public spheres, have the freedom to discuss topics that were not seen as appropriate for women, explore gender fluidity, or elude law enforcement, the collection of resources presented in this new display brings together evidence of specific women who used pseudonyms to share their work alongside pieces that explore the use of pseudonyms more widely. By Any Other Name will be on display in Sawyer’s Lippman Atrium through the end of March as part of Women’s History Month.
